Debunking the myths

Why Unionizing might be right for you

If you have read through the rest of this web site then it should not be that tough decision to consider joining a union except that many drivers have never had any experience with a union and are unsure what to expect. In the overnight delivery industry, DHL, UPS and Purolator are all unionized while Fedex is unorganized except for their airline pilots. The largest same day delivery company in Canada, Dynamex Delivery, is 70% unionized along with a growing number of smaller local companies. The number of unionized workers continues to grow as delivery workers realize that the Independent Contractor model used in the courier industry allows the company they work for to skirt the law and not pay workers what they are legally owed.

CUPW (Canadian Union of Postal Workers) for example, has been very busy in the past few years helping drivers and bike messengers get organized.

The bottom line according to Stats Canada, after taking all factors into account, is that unionized workers on average earn 7.7% more than non-unionized workers.

Then there are the myths, half-truths and sometimes outright lies that get told about unions… such as:

Text Box: Workers in unions earn an average of $4.49 more per hour than non-unionized workers
Women in unions earn 49% more than their non-union counterparts
Part-time workers in unions earn an average of $6.84 more per hour than non-unionized part-time workers
83% of unionized workers are covered by workplace pension plans or group RRSPs, as compared to 33% of non-unionized workers
