If you have read through the rest of this web site then it should not be that tough decision to consider joining a union except that many drivers have never had any experience with a union and are unsure what to expect. In the overnight delivery industry, DHL, UPS and Purolator are all unionized while Fedex is unorganized except for their airline pilots. The largest same day delivery company in Canada, Dynamex Delivery, is 70% unionized along with a growing number of smaller local companies. The number of unionized workers continues to grow as delivery workers realize that the Independent Contractor model used in the courier industry allows the company they work for to skirt the law and not pay workers what they are legally owed. CUPW (Canadian Union of Postal Workers) for example, has been very busy in the past few years helping drivers and bike messengers get organized. The bottom line according to Stats Canada, after taking all factors into account, is that unionized workers on average earn 7.7% more than non-unionized workers.
